| While the biker film genre started in the 1950s with The Wild One, it was the actual post war use of motorcycles by ex-servicemen and formation of motorcycle clubs that was the seed. The changes in society at this time brought out the changes in film. The 1950s bikers were mild rebels or delinquents. The psychedelic sixties brought even more changes into our culture, subcultures, and film making. Movies got more violent, sexy, with drugs, just like America. The major studios changed and more independents got involved with low budget films for drive-ins aimed at the youth. Many reviewers say the biker film took over the Western genre with similar plots. We have biker gangs, few are ok folk, but mostly psychos with in-fighting, violence, sex, drugs, rape, town terrorizing, revenge, and rock n roll. Also have town folks or cops that are scared or prejudiced. Lots of drug use and slang, often the bikers are given hippie characteristics – how true was that? But the hippies are often included. These films have much music/video montages to pad the story, especiall the falling in love scenes. The British also had their biker films but without the “Western” background more social comment or SciFi/Horror edge. American International Pictures made several of the Avalon/Funicello beach movies with the bumbling Eric Von Zipper and his Rats and Mice MC. Good mindless fun and one of few times bikers are humorous in movies. |

1965 Aug Motor Psycho Directed by Russ Meyer “Three bad boy motorcyclists get kicks raping other people's women and generally being a nuisance. When they rape a veterinarian's wife, he takes exception and pursues them,” IMDb - allmovie.com With the hype in The Big Book of Biker Films and others, had to see this one. 1966 or 1967 Outlaw Motorcycles “The real name of the director was Titus Moede; his nom de film, Titus Moody, was lifted from a character who used to appear on the old Fred Allen radio show. Moede/Moody is the only credited participant, a docudrama about the California cycle scene. We are treated to an enactment of a biker wedding and a biker funeral, several staged sequences of wild parties, and endless shots of cycle races, both on and off the track. Despite the film's lurid title, nothing much really happens. The whole thing looks like a glorified home movie, which makes the hardcase types who appear seem endearingly childlike at times. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide" Allmovie.com * IMDb |

1967 The Acid Eaters “The clock strikes five on a Friday afternoon, and a gang of part-time bohemians hop aboard their motorcycles and hit the highway looking for kicks.” allmovie.com Because of the above this movie showed in a motorcycle search, while they do ride a lot in the movie, it is not a biker film but a drug film. Seems the freedom of a bike leads to drugs and sex. The group doesn’t do anything gang like except for robbing a cager, and wearing red shirts. And those are off a lot during the film. The girls are mostly topless so almost seems to be soft porn – fitting DVD is on Something Weird Video label. |

| 1969 June Easy Rider Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson “Two counterculture bikers travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans in search of America.” IMDb. What else is there to say? The ultimate Biker Movie – it made the American Film Institute’s top 100 Films of All Time. Another with heavy drug influence and rock music especially Born to Be Wild. Definately the ultimate exploration film. Easy Rider fan site |

1969 June Satan’s Sadists reissued as Nightmare Bloodbath Russ Tamblyn, Robert Dix “The "Satans" are a very cruel biker gang led by Anchor. The gang goes to a diner in the middle of nowhere in the California desert where they begin to terrorize ...” IMDb. For a movie shot in ten days, this Al Adamson classic has fairly good production, good opening credits, and decent acting. I can see why some call it the Citizen Kane of Biker Movies (but then I never thought Citizen Kane deserved to be the number one AFI film). It is a mild gore with body count at 15. |
